1). Something that I learned
Something that I learned during the class discussion was that the Box Man is happy with the simplicity of his life when compared to the other examples in the story
2). Something I wished we would have discussed
I wished we would have discussed the author's background more, so we could have understood the short story better.

3). Something I wish we would have said
Something that I wished I would have said during the discussion is that the story is not from the Box Man’s point of view, so we cannot be entirely sure the Box Man is content with his situation. All the evidence around his story suggests that he is happy but we cannot be sure. The author can manipulate the story to make it seem like so.
I thought your response to question 3 was very interesting and mind-boggling because I don't think any of us really considered that Box Man may not be content with his situation. We assume he is because that is what the author wants use to believe but we aren't entirely sure EXACTLY how Box Man feels, we can only make an assumption based off of the information presented to us. Your speculation is very interesting and I hope at some point we may be able to discuss it further in class.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that we don't actually know the Box Man's thoughts is such a good point! I don't think that the Box Man being unhappy with his situation is really a plausible possibility, if we take his actions into account, but we don't know any of his specific thoughts or feelings. The story is written in such a way that this is easy to forget, so thanks for pointing it out.
